Advanced Training for Working Professionals
If you are a front-line addictions counsellor or health administrator working in an Aboriginal context, you can benefit from Nechi training in two ways: by taking complete programs or by taking individual courses. You will need to have a background in counselling in order to enrol in some programs. Please check each program’s prerequisites before enrolling. The Advanced Counsellor Training Certificate (ACT) provides advanced skills development in the counselling field. Students of this five-course program learn: one-on-one counselling, family dynamics, group dynamics, suicide prevention and grieving, Aboriginal culture and traditional values. If you manage staff, you should consider our Program Management Certificate (PM) that prepares you for a career in management. Students learn: Internal Relations and Communications, Strategic Planning and Evaluation, External Relations and Proposal Writing. If you want to teach, the Training of Trainers Certificate (TOT) will give you the tools to train addictions counsellors. Trainers focus on: communication, developing a safe learning environment, course design, needs assessment, adult learning theory, experiential learning, learning objectives preparation, group dynamics/facilitation skills, and evaluation of learning. If you work with youth, Nechi Institute, in partnership with the Association of Youth Solvent Addictions Committee (YSAC), brings you four effective youth worker courses: Youth Addictions, Survival Skills for Youth Workers, Communicating with Youth, and Healthy Sexuality. For professionals interested in learning more about a variety of contemporary issues which challenge the Aboriginal community, Nechi offers several week long Specialty Courses:
- Adult Children of Alcoholics
- Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders
- Gambling Awareness: Treatment & Recovery Issues
- Journey to Hope & Healing: Beyond Trauma and Abuse

Through culturally appropriate training, Nechi Institute provides those who would like to work in the addictions field; counsellors, health care workers, social workers, educators, community service agencies, and government agencies, with the training tools and resources to help individuals heal themselves and their communities from the pain and devastation caused by addictions and abuse.
