If you have no formal training, consider enrolling in our core program Community Addictions Training (CAT) that consists of six modules, each consists of 40 hours of training, including a mandatory cultural resource on Sunday Evenings from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

CAT 6: Intervention and Prevention
These courses will provide you with the ability to:
effectively communicate, by utilizing techniques such as “I statements” – and the “Feedback sandwich”;
understand the process of addiction and the defences people use to – enable continued use;
understand the impact of addictions on the family;
assess the client’s readiness for treatment;
employ effective treatment techniques;
assist clients to maintain sobriety;
design a community prevention program;
examine your own life and that of your client by utilizing personal – growth tools.
CAT will give you a sound foundation to build a career in the addictions counselling field.
Advanced Training For Working Professionals
If you are a front-line addictions counsellor or health administrator working in an Indigenous context, you can benefit from Nechi training in two ways: by taking complete programs or by taking individual courses. You will need to have a background in counselling in order to enrol in some programs. Please check each program’s prerequisites before enrolling. The Advanced Counsellor Training Certificate (ACT) provides advanced skills development in the counselling field. Students of this five-course program learn: one-on-one counselling, family dynamics, group dynamics, suicide prevention and grieving, Indigenous culture and traditional values. If you manage staff, check out our “Leadership Workshop” that prepares you for a career in management and effective leadership abilities. If you want to teach, the Training of Trainers Certificate (TOT) will give you the tools to train addictions counsellors. Trainers focus on: communication, developing a safe learning environment, course design, needs assessment, adult learning theory, experiential learning, learning objectives preparation, group dynamics/facilitation skills, and evaluation of learning. If you work with youth, Nechi Institute brings you five effective youth worker courses: Youth Addictions, Survival Skills for Youth Workers, Communicating with Youth, Healthy Sexuality, and Peer to Peer – Youth Resiliency Program. Offsite Contract Training
Nechi trainers can travel to your community to conduct on-site contract training. Sponsoring organizations have found that it is cost-efficient to bring Nechi into their community to train a group rather than sending one or two individuals to the Centre for professional development training.
